At about 22.30 hours on October 27, 1942, the Vice Commodore's vessel, SS Stentor was sailing to Liverpool with a cargo of West African Produce from Lagos together with one hundred and twenty-five passengers. Ninety-three crew members, seven gunners and one hundred and seven passengers were picked up by HMS Woodruff (for Milford Haven) of which one hundred survivors were taken off by HMS Ramsay and landed in Liverpool. The master (William Williams), the Vice-Commodore (Capt Richard Hart Garstin), twenty crew members, three army personnel, four nurses and sixteen passengers lost their lives.
