SS ROWANBANK

On January 31, 1941, SS Rowanbank was sailing from Laurenco Marques to Oban in SL.62 when she was bombed and sunk by German aircraft. The position was 57.00N, 16.30W (300 miles NW of Ireland). There were no survivors and the full ship's complement of sixty-eight were lost. The master (Francis Lyall) and the British crew members are commemorated on Tower Hill, Panel 89 but the commemoration for the Lascar crew are unkown at this time.

DOYLE, Third Engineer Officer, HUGH, S.S. Rowanbank (Glasgow). Merchant Navy. 31st January 1941. Age 23. Son of Thomas and Mary Doyle, of Nitshill, Glasgow.

FLETCHER, Deck Hand, SAMUEL, S.S. Rowanbank (Glasgow). Merchant Navy. 31st January 1941. Age 36.

HUNTER, Fourth Engineer Officer, JAMES SCULLION, S.S. Rowanbank (Glasgow). Merchant Navy. 31st January 1941. Age 24. Son of William and Margaret Hunter, of Glasgow.

LYALL, Master, FRANCIS, S.S. Rowanbank (Glasgow). Merchant Navy. 31st January 1941. Age 34. Son of William Lyall and of Williamina Lyall (nee Lyall); husband of Agnes Ann Lyall (nee Thomson), of Aberdeen.

MEREDITH, Radio Officer, GEORGE, S.S. Rowanbank (Glasgow). Merchant Navy. 31st January 1941. Age 18. Son of Harry and Muriel Meredith, of Dyserth, Flintshire.

METCALF, Third Officer, JOHN CALLUM, S.S. Rowanbank (Glasgow). Merchant Navy. 31st January 1941. Age 22. Son of William Henry and Janet Metcalf, of Grindon, Sunderland, Co. Durham. His brothers William and Ernest Gordon also fell.

SCHOLEFIELD, First Engineer Officer, ROBERT PERCIVAL, S.S. Rowanbank (Glasgow). Merchant Navy. 31st January 1941. Age 50.

WILLIS, Second Radio Officer, PETER JAMES DILWYN, S.S. Rowanbank (Glasgow). Merchant Navy. 31st January 1941. Age 18.
