SS HINDPOOL

Around 06.00 hours on March 8, 1941, SS Hindpool, bound for Middlesborough with a cargo of Pepel ore (iron ore) from Pepel, was torpedoed and sunk by U-124. The position was 20.51N, 20.32W (NE of the Cape Verde Islands). Six crew members were rescued by HMS Faulknor (H 62) and landed at Gibraltar and four crew members and two gunners were rescued by SS Guido. The master (Malcolm Vernon A. Tinnock) and twenty-seven men lost their lives. Twenty-seven crew members are commemorated on Tower Hill, Panel 57.
