Convoy WS.1 carried some 10,000 reinforcement troops destined for the Middle East. Line astern formation was adopted in conditions of poor visibility with HMS CUMBERLAND sailing 25°, 1 mile ahead on the port bow of leading vessel (Queen Mary).
